BRITISH RED CROSS

Great North Run places up for grabs now for North East runners

Runners and joggers from the North East are being asked to make the world a better place by taking part in this year’s Bupa Great North Run on 16th September. If you didn’t get a place in the ballot, then don’t despair!

The Red Cross still has some guaranteed places in this year’s event and according to Community Fundraiser Margaret Musgrave “these will be allocated on a first come first served basis, so you will need to act fast”

The Great North Run is the world’s biggest half marathon and it can be difficult to get a place in the event. Those who sign up to raise money for the Red Cross not only secure their place in this ever popular event, they also receive a running vest, useful tips, and valuable support from the fundraising team, and the money raised will help save lives and change lives across the world and around the corner.

Margaret said “everyone knows about the Red Cross but very few people realise the amount of work we do locally and on their doorstep. Running for the Red Cross enables the charity to continue its vital work both in the UK and abroad and its great fun. I look forward to working with people from the North East who want to run for us.

For more information and to secure your place, contact Margaret by texting “GNR” and your name to 07843346159, call 0191 2737961 or e-mail mmusgrave@redcross.org.uk, apply online at redcross.org.uk/gnr

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People 30th Anniversary Year

In June 2012 the Hearing Dogs Charity will have been training assistance dogs for deaf people for 30 years.

After operating for three decades, the Charity not only has to train dogs to meet the needs of new, deaf applicants but, also, must train more and more second and subsequent dogs to replace those retiring or who are lost. With no central or local government funding, Hearing Dogs relies completely on the generosity of individuals and groups in communities throughout the UK to continue and expand its important work. So celebrations for the 30th anniversary are going to be in the form of fundraising events and activities.

Here in the North, as well encouraging people to join in with things that are already organized, I am asking everyone to think about hosting their own activity to raise funds for Hearing Dogs. Almost anything is suitable – a coffee morning, a sponsored walk, a bring and buy sale. Sporty or social events, large or small gatherings – all can raise money to fund our work and it is true that every penny really does count.

Please think about what you could do to help in your area. I am happy to support your efforts in any way possible. Call Lynn on 01287 659070 or email me at lynn.larner@hearingdogs.org.uk

ISOS Housing

Area Panels – two independent members

Voluntary with expenses paid

Isos Housing is a dynamic and vibrant housing provider delivering quality housing and services to around 20,000 residents across the North East region. We are a leading provider of affordable and supported housing.

We have two resident-led Area Panels to provide ideas and influence the decisions we make.

One panel is for Northumberland and the other covers Tyneside and Wearside, County Durham and Teesside.

The Area Panels scrutinise our performance, help shape our services, and reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.

We now want to strengthen these panels with the appointment of independent members who are not Isos residents.

We want to hear from people with a strong sense of social purpose, who believe in the building of communities and care about the way services are delivered.

No housing experience is required but you will need the experience and perspective to play a key role in the panels’ work.

If, like us, you think this is an exciting opportunity and would like some further detail please contact Tina Drury, Executive Director, Customers and Communities, for an informal chat, on 0191 292 3301.

For an application pack please ring Annie Bromwich-Alexandra on 0191 292 3221 or email areapanelrecruitment@isoshousing.co.uk

Keyfund

Young People

Are you 11-25 and really want to make a difference in your communities but there just don’t seem to be any opportunities out there for you? Or do you work with young people aged 11-25? Have you heard of Keyfund? Keyfund helps young people to set up their own projects or activities, and after you’ve planned and designed it, we’ll then reward you with the money to make it happen. We offer incremental ‘pots’ of money from £250 to £500 then £1000 and finally £2000 to make your ideas a reality. You could choose to use this money for fundraising schemes to support favourite charities or you could set up a project, for example visiting resident’s homes or running activities in nurseries. You might even choose to use the money to try a new experience for yourself and your friends – it really is totally up to you what you want to do with the money.

You will need to be supported by somebody over 18 who is linked to an organisation. This might be a teacher, a youth worker, a volunteer at a community centre or anybody else who volunteers or is employed by an organisation. We will train this person to use Keyfund with you and then it’s over to you! We have a training session coming up on Monday February 27th so if you’d like to get involved ask the adult to get in touch with us on 0191 261 4029 or rossieashton@keyfund.org.uk or speak to the Volunteer Centre.

‘Ubunye’

“On 22nd March Crisis are holding an event dubbed ‘Ubunye’ (meaning ‘unity’ in Zulu) at Blackfriars Centre. Ubunye is focussing on homelessness and have eight organisations involved who support vulnerable people from all backgrounds. There will be presentations at the beginning from people who use the services followed by open networking, stalls, displays, information and more. It is a unique opportunity to get a real feel of what Tyne and Wear has to offer.

Ubunye runs from 2-6pm and is an open invite. It will be particularly beneficial for people interested in volunteering, fundraising, supporting charities and those who may benefit from the services. It is a unique event and a great chance to meet with lots of fantastic local organisations with plenty to offer; seeing the work they do first hand.

If you are interested in attending please e-mail peter.ennals@crisis.org.uk, counney.kemp@crisis.org.uk, or call Crisis (0191) 222 06 22 and ask for Peter Ennals or Coco Kemp.”
